They also have quite a few features that GOG, nor any competition doesn't offer - mainly social features, like this very forum, streaming but also stuff like robust controller support and others.

For many steam is the place to buy PC games. It's been for the longest, they offer far far more games - there are games here that you won't be able to get anywhere else. Steam, however, is the more popular platform. GOG piles them into one place, so I can organise them and better get a handle of my catalog. In addition, being able to organise games accross various libraries has been very welcome - as I own games on steam, gog, epic, ubilauncher, origin. As you can see on the screenshot, both are available. And when you buy the game, you don't choose installer or Galaxy client. I use it because if you don't you have to manually download patches and game download is just one click away.
Whenever you choose Galaxy client is up to you. For that reason, GOG is my shop of choice. So you can download the installer and save it in any way you wish - external drive, burn it into DVD, whatever you want. So if you are afraid that one day the service will shut down GOG is your best digital friend - all of their games are DRM free. If you go for one of the clients, is one considered the "best"? If people have a choice, do they tend to go DRM-free or choose something like Steam or GOG Galaxy? I guess DRM free means you still have the game if Steam/GOG disappear/go out of business for whatever reason in the future, but you don't have their achievements for each game or friends/automatic updates/etc.

Also Desperados3 demo and full game are now available on steam if you prefer. They are not a key seller - you won't get a steam key from them. GOG sells games - so they are to be used on their platform. You don't need to use GOG Galaxy client to play games from gog but you need to download the installers. It seems you downloaded the demo via GOG Galaxy.
